Safe Out
What is Safe Out?
Safe Out is a program funded by Magellan Health Services and administered by TERROS, Inc. in collaboration with the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) Consortium, to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and its negative consequences for the LGBTQ community in Maricopa County.
Is Safe Out trying to stop people from drinking?
Safe Out does not wish to put a stop to your fun or the social aspect of LGBTQ bars, clubs, and restaurants.
Instead, Safe Out is aimed at increasing the positive impact of education, awareness, and pride which, as a natural consequence, will lower the incidence of excessive drinking and the huge cost the LGBTQ community suffers as a result of it.
Most people do not recognize how powerful even just a few drinks can be.
Why is LGBTQ alcohol abuse something that needs attention?
Studies have shown an issue with excessive drinking among LGBTQ adults in Maricopa County—in fact, LGBTQ individuals are 30% more likely to have an alcohol abuse problem than the average American.
This abuse of alcohol has come with several very negative consequences for the individuals and the community as a whole. Negative impacts of over-drinking include loss of relationships, monetary impacts, DUI, sexual assault, addiction, job loss, and depression. Consequences of over-drinking can also be seen in the loss of life due to alcohol related illness, car accidents, and suicide.
What can I do to help my community?
Safe Out wants the community to be safe, and encourages the safety of you, your friends, and our local businesses.
To help your community be proud, healthy, happy, prosperous, comfortable, fun, safe, and out, be a positive example and please consider getting involved with the Safe Out Program.
